Explore the captivating Inca Bridge Q’eswachaka, designated as “Intangible Cultural Heritage” by UNESCO, on a tour that will immerse you in the historical richness of Cusco. Just 2 hours and 45 minutes from the city, in the Canas district, this hanging bridge represents a remarkable feat of Inca engineering and local craftsmanship.
This bridge is made with reeds, assembled using the ancient Q’eswa technique, a task in which local inhabitants participate. On the exciting tour to the Inca Bridge Q’eswachaka, travelers will enjoy a hike to reach the bridge while contemplating spectacular mountainous landscapes and winding rivers. The experience also includes an immersion in the history and culture of the region, in addition to the surrounding natural beauty. Upon reaching the bridge, they will have the opportunity to cross it on foot and appreciate the skill of local artisans. The Inca Bridge Q’eswachaka guarantees a unique and memorable experience for those seeking an exceptional adventure in Peru.
We start with your pickup at 4:00 a.m. at your hotel in Cusco. We will travel south along the road to the province of Canas, enjoying views of the Pomacanchi Lagoon and the enigmatic Urcos Lagoon, where it is said that the last Inca ordered all the gold of the Empire to be taken to protect it from the Spaniards. We will also visit the Pabellones volcano with its striking presence and the mountain pass of the same name.
Upon arriving at “Q’eswachaka” (Qeshuachaca), we will explore its ancestral bridge, a legacy of a millenary tradition that encompasses art, architecture, and culture in the Andean world. This emblematic bridge stands over the majestic Apurímac River in the province of Canas. Since the material (straw) of the last Inca bridge deteriorates annually due to the mountain climate, it requires maintenance every June, which involves a total reconstruction. These days become celebrations for the local communities, reflecting an ancient custom.
It is a full-day hike of moderate to demanding difficulty due to the distance and altitude. Good physical condition and acclimatization are recommended.
We recommend arriving in Cusco 1 or 2 days early to acclimatize, staying hydrated, eating light and avoiding alcohol the day before. Coca tea helps and, if you are sensitive, you can bring altitude-sickness pills ("Soroche Pills"), available at any pharmacy.
Warm, layered clothing, a waterproof jacket, trekking shoes or boots, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen (50+ SPF), water, energy snacks, your original ID and cash in soles for entrance fees and tips.
The dry season (April to October) offers sunny days and the best trails. November to March is rainier, but the scenery is greener and there are fewer visitors.
